The Switzerland national flag represents freedom, honor, and fidelity
Switzerland's national flag is a red square (not a rectangle!) with a white cross on it, whose arms do not reach the borders
History
In 1359,
two crossed white stripes were worn as a distinguishing mark on Bernese
soldiers´clothing. The white cross on a
red background, a Christian symbol, originated also from the battle flag of the
Holy Roman Empire. In 1815, the Federal Pact established the symmetrical white
cross on a red background as the official coat of arms. The Swiss flag was
defined in its present form in 1889, when the Federal Council decreed that the
four branches of the cross were to be one sixth longer than their width. *
